This diatonic scale is one of the most commonly used scales and is the first one you should learn as a piano or music student. This may sound like literal insanity to you. In this lesson, we will learn all about major scales. This way I found I was able to think about less all at once, which afforded me the opportunity to learn the key and transpose at the same time as well as learning to think about the scales in a more relative way. If you know the chord progression you can kind of think of it in different terms. ![]() (Personally, I play the lever harp so switching keys can be a procedure, this made it more demanding but also better for me to learn.)īut the thing that really helped was transposing on the fly with very simple things like etudes. You may like a different pattern of learning, maybe all sharps. I personally moved from 1 sharp to 1 flat. ![]() As you learn one, the next will already make a little bit more sense. Then switch back and forth between C and G with your scales/etudes. After you are comfortable in C, move into G. You can practice building a major scale off each of those notes, using the major scale pattern. As a personal anecdote, i found that the only way for me to be truly comfortable within any given key was to take my time. The most common major scales on the piano are C, G, D, A & E so focus on learning those first.
